Going - and Staying - Solo
Moving On After Divorce

We don't subscribe to the old feminist slogan that " a woman without a man is like a fish without a bicycle." Nearly 75% of all people who divorce decide to give marriage another chance.

But we do encourage you to spend some time going solo before you enter into new relationships. Put the pain of divorce well behind you and strengthen all aspects of your life. A stronger you will help you be an equal partner in future relationships.

You may decide you prefer the single life. Many people - particularly women - enjoy taking control of their own lives, particularly after enduring a bad marriage. You don't need to apologize to anybody for your choice, but do examine why you're making it.

If you say no, because:

The memories of your failed marriage are too strong, then...

Work on putting those feelings behind you. Start by dealing with your grief.

You're worried about what will happen to your property, then...

Consider a marital agreement to protect you and your heirs.

You're unwilling to sacrifice your autonomy again, then...

Learn more about how marriage can be a 50-50 partnership.

You have companionship without marriage, then

Sit down with your companion and prepare a contract to make sure your property and autonomy are protected. Follow the guidelines for a marital agreement before consulting your lawyers.

You're satisfied with your new lifestyle, then...

Enjoy.
